Insecurity Monitor, Summer 2025

Insecurity Monitor is Security in Context’s (SiC’s) annual print and digital magazine, featuring the most important outputs from across research tracks. Launched in 2020, Security in Context is a transnational research network whose mission is to advance critical and non-Western perspectives on global affairs.

This article examines recent land deals in agriculture and carbon credits between the UAE and African countries and their role in reshaping geopolitical dynamics in the context of a rapidly escalating climate crisis. The paper will explore the nature of these deals, their impact on indigenous and local communities, for instance in Kenya’s Mau forest, and whether these new agreements are indicative of sub-imperial relationships that will configure south-south relationships in the coming years of late fossil capitalism.
